Himalayan Persian cats are more popularly known as the color point Persians. This is more so the case in Europe where as in the United States they go by as Himalayan cats. Basically this particular breed is a hybrid between the traditional Persian and the Siamese cat.

Characteristics of the hybrid cat

This cross breeding is what produces the unique color markings at the specific points on the Himalayan cat’s body. The Himalayan also possesses more character than the purebred Persian. In its essence though, the Himalayan is described as being a Persian with the coat coloring of a Siamese cat.

The basic color of the coat is white and you will be able to find a wide variety of color points ranging from blue to brown and chocolate to tabby. In the world of cats this unique cross is registered under the Persian cat category.

With regards to the health and grooming issues with the Himalayan cats they are just as demanding as regular Persian cats. Hence you will have to spend a considerable amount of time when it comes to the grooming of your Himalayan cat. The most desired Himalayan cat will feature a set of deep blue eyes and long fur coat with color points.

Origins of the Himalayan cat

The Himalayan cat was “invented” so as to say by a pair of a scientist and a breeder. The unlikely duo got together back in the 1930’s to conduct a range of experimental breeding programs. The goal of the experiments was to end up with a cat that has a long fur coat with color points. It took the duo almost five years to come up with a successful specimen.

The technique was published and more breeders started experimenting with the technique in the 1950’s. It was in 1955 that the Himalayan Persian cat received its first official registration with the GCCF in UK. USA followed suite two years later.

Variety in Himalayan cats

The Himalayan Persian cat is available in a wide variety of interesting point colors. Some of the most popular colors for the Himalayan are chocolate, red, blue, lilac, seal, blue cream, lilac cream, tortie lynx, choclate tortie and lilac cream.

The Himalayan doll face is another variety that is extremely popular amongst the cat lovers. This cat has the wonderful point color coat with the cute doll face making it a highly desirable cat.

One of the most defining features of the Himalayan cat’s face is the marked split on their face. The Ultra Face and Peeked variety of the Himalayan bear close resemblance to the Persian. It has the trademark frowning mouth with an unbroken nose and notably squinty eyes. It is only the doll face variety that has the big round eyes.

Today you will be able to find many specialist Persian cat breeders that deal in the Himalayan and its varieties only. In recent years the Himalayan has become one of the most popular choices when it comes to choosing a pet cat.
